June 5, 2020, Büyükeceli, Mersin Province, Turkey. - Employees of the Akkuyu NPP construction site held an event to clean up the streets of Büyükeceli settlement on the occasion of World Environment Day. AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC employees together with representatives of IC İçtas İnsaat Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. participated in the event aimed at raising awareness for environmental problems. Almost 100 people passed along the streets of Büyükeceli to remove garbage and make the settlement cleaner.

“Büyükeceli has become a home for the employees of our company working at the Akkuyu NPP construction site, and together with local residents we want to keep it tidy. Collecting garbage means taking care of one's home; this is a need that each of us should understand. Mankind has a common home – our Earth, and each of us is responsible for its purity”, said Alexey Frolov, Director for GR and International Cooperation of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC. - Nuclear energy has the least impact on the environment from all the types of power generation. Everyone who works at nuclear power plants and supports nuclear technologies contributes to the conservation of nature. Nature generously gives us its resources, beauty and grandeur - we must take care of it. Only in this way will we maintain favorable conditions for the life of future generations”.

Employees of the Akkuyu NPP construction site hold cleanup events on a regular basis. This year the event was conducted with strict observance of epidemiological safety measures.

World Environment Day established by the UN General Assembly in 1972. The declaration made by the UN General Assembly on that date commits to states and organizations to conduct annual events on this day that confirm their will to preserve and improve the environment. Each year the events are held under a new theme. In 2020, it was "Time of Nature."
