July 18, 2021, Aydincik, Mersin Province, Turkey. – Companies involved in the construction of Akkuyu NPP, Turkey's first nuclear power plant, supported the emergency services of Mersin province in extinguishing a forest fire near Pembecik village, Aydincik district, Mersin province.
The forest fire began on Thursday, July 15, 2021 and, driven by a strong wind, covered an area of about 1,5 thousand hectares. 11 people from AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC took part in the extinguishing works, including the crew of a fire truck carrying duty at the Akkuyu NPP construction site. The contractors involved in the construction of the nuclear power plant dispatched seven tank trucks and one bulldozer to the fire area.
In total, 3 firefighting aircraft, 21 helicopters, 165 fire engines, 25 tankers and a total of about 850 personnel were involved in extinguishing the fire. The flames did not threaten the settlements, but residents of 81 houses were evacuated as a precaution. It took the firefighters about 50 hours to localize the spread of the flames and take the fire under control; currently, a watch of forestry teams is organized in the area, and work is underway to wet down the territory.
Employees of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC firefighting department are on 24/7 duty at the Akkuyu NPP construction site. The fire safety employees conduct daily detour at the site and monitor compliance with fire safety standards at all the construction areas. If necessary, AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC firefighting brigades respond to calls from the emergency services of Mersin province and take part in extinguishing forest fires in areas located near the site of the nuclear power plant under construction.
