30 August 2021, Mersin province, Turkey. - Specialists of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, who had completed the target training program for Akkuyu NPP operational personnel at the Russian National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, conducted training for teachers of vocational high schools of Mersin province.

"Introduction to nuclear energy" course will be included in the curriculum of seven vocational high schools in Mersin as of 2021-2022 academic year. Within one week, the teachers of the course attended lectures and seminars organized at the training center of Akkuyu NPP under construction. The training was conducted by qualified specialists of JSC AKKUYU NUCLEAR, graduates of NRNU MEPhI with a degree in “Nuclear Power Plants: Design, Operation and Engineering”.

The training was carried out on the basis of a protocol on cooperation in the field of vocational education, concluded in June 2020 between the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey, AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC and the joint venture TITAN2 IC ICTAS INSAAT ANONIM SIRKETI, the main contractor for the Akkuyu NPP construction.

According to the protocol, AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC undertook the obligations to develop and publish training materials for the "Introduction to Nuclear Energy" course, as well as to participate in the joint work of the parties in order to analyse the needs of the Akkuyu NPP project in labor force at the construction and installation works stage.

During the training, AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC electrical unit specialist Ahmet Yasin Oner made presentation on the topic of “Nuclear energy and its role in the modern world”; AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC radiation safety specialist Deniz Leblebici made presentation on "Atom, radiation and radioactivity"; repair preparation and application unit specialist Okan Koc told about the areas of radioactive isotopes application; turbine shop specialist Ahmet Avci - about nuclear fuel cycle; repair management specialist Atahan Kiseсik – about nuclear power plants principles of operation and nuclear safety.

Nurettin Ambaroglu, Director of Ataturk Anatolian Vocational High School in Toroslar district, Mersin: “Starting this year, the curriculum of the 11th grades of our and six other technical schools will include two academic hours per week for the “Introduction to nuclear energy” course and 4 hours of studying the Russian language. We will tell our students about how people use the atomic energy applying modern technologies. In the future, we hope to conduct practical classes for students at the NPP construction site. In the near future, about 700 students from various educational institutions and areas of specialization will attend this course. At the high school, which I represent, the course will be conducted among future builders, concrete workers, and formworkers. In the future, course will be extended to students of the 12th, 9th and 10th grades. In the long run our goal is to form a separate branch of training of specialists for the needs of the nuclear industry in vocational high schools. Our teachers are also interested in this, especially since during the training they have the opportunity to get all the necessary information from qualified specialists."

Latif Uzun, physics teacher, Ataturk Anatolian Vocational High School in Toroslar district, Mersin: “The training was very effective and incredibly useful for us, teachers, because in the future we have to tell our students about atomic energy. Of course, we would like to visit the Akkuyu NPP site and to see with our own eyes how the plant is being built – it will help us to better understand the principles of NPP’s operation. Detailed presentations by the specialists of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, real professionals of the nuclear industry, inspired us, and now we are ready to transfer the acquired knowledge to our students."

AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC electric shop specialist Ahmet Yasin Oner: "This is a great opportunity for us to pass on the knowledge we have gained to Turkish youth, and in this regard, I would like to thank the Ministry of Energy and our company for their trust in us. We tried to tell the high school teachers as much as possible about the modules of the training course and answer all their questions. While studying in Russia for many years, we received knowledge that we now pass on to professional teachers - this is an incredibly valuable experience for us. I hope that thanks to these seminars, the teachers have better mastered the content of the course, and received detailed information about Akkuyu NPP."

AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC radiation safety specialist Deniz Leblebici: “I am very happy to participate in such a project and to help the young generation to learn more about nuclear energy, so that in the future they will have the opportunity for employment at the nuclear power plant. I tried to present the material in a comprehensible form and to give detailed answers to the questions that, in my opinion, will most often arise among students."

The protocol on cooperation in the field of vocational education between the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC and the joint venture TITAN2 IC ICTAS INSAAT ANONIM SIRKETI was signed in order to ensure the training of qualified personnel for the Akkuyu NPP under construction.

Based on the protocol, the specialists of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, with the support of the Ministry of National Education and teachers of specialized departments of universities of the Republic of Turkey, developed a textbook of the "Introduction to Nuclear Energy" course. The academic course was approved by the Council for Education and Discipline of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Turkey, and from the 2021-2022 academic year it is included in the curriculum of seven vocational high schools of Mersin. Students will be provided with all the necessary materials, in addition, in order to increase the efficiency of the course, it is planned to conduct technical tours to the Akkuyu NPP construction site, additional classes at the training center at the NPP under construction, as well as tours to the Akkuyu NPP Public Information Center in Mersin.
