Core fueling of reactor 1 has completed at Novovoronezh NPP-2

The core fueling has been fully completed under implementation of the physical start-up of innovative power unit 1 (WWER-1200) of Novovoronezh NPP-2. An array of works preceded the start of phase one of the physical start-up of the power unit under AES-2006 project, namely: transportation of casings with fuel assemblies (FA) from the fresh fuel storage facility to the reactor compartment, check of personnel and equipment readiness. An only after that the first fuel assembly was loaded on March 24 – physical start-up commenced. As of today all fuel assemblies with nuclear fuel have been loaded in the core.

The following steps related to putting of power unit 1 into operation will be related to receipt of permits for further phases of physical start-up: reactor fuel assembly, actuation of the main circulation pumps (MCP) to convert the reactor plant into “hot” status and performance of a set of tests at minimum controllable power level (MCP). That will be a completion of the physical start-up and transfer to the nuclear reactor power start-up.

Power Unit №1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is a standard design of the new 3+ generation Russian NPP with improved performance indicators. It is constructed in accordance with the NPP-2006 project with PWR-1200 reactor facility. Half-a-century experience of safe operation and accident-free performance of NPPs with PWR reactors formed the basis of the project. The modern project takes into account compliance with the requirements of Russian regulatory documents and IAEA recommendations. The main peculiarity of the innovative power unit is the use of additional passive safety systems in combination with traditional active systems.


The NPP-2006 project provides for the protection against earthquakes, seismic surge, tornadoes, aircraft crash and other man-induced impacts and their combinations. The technical features of the 3+ generation reactor take into account all Russian safety requirements and recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with due regard for Fukushima NPP accident. The reactor hall (containment building) in the NPP-2006 project has double containment; the molten core catcher is installed under the reactor vessel, and the reactor facility is equipped with the passive residual heat removal system.   


Novovoronezh NPP-2 is the reference plant for “Akkuyu”, the first nuclear power plant in the Republic of Turkey.
