FIRE FIGHTERS RESPOND QUICKLY TO AIR COMPRESSOR OVERHEATING AT THE AKKUYU NPP SITE

1 May 2021, Büyükeceli, Mersin Province, Turkey. - During a regular patrol at the Akkuyu NPP construction site on 25.04.2021 at around 16:20, it was observed by Akkuyu Security guards that smoke was emitted from an air compressor. The equipment was located in the 9th step of the slope near the switchyard area. In the meantime, it was seen that the firefighters were fast to respond to the situation and performed routine drill, coming directly to the area to initiate correct procedures to control the occurrence. All the relevant Akkuyu teams responded correctly and promptly to this alert to bring the situation under control. Later it was explained in a protocol report that while the air compressor was operating, smoke came from the engine part spontaneously, by intervening with fire extinguishers and informing the firefighters the conclusion was safe handling of the occurrence. The smoke from air compressor accumulated in the sky and could be viewed by the residents of the surrounding areas. As the result of the incident no injuries were sustained, as well as no harm was caused to the environment.
