Iran hopes to be able to begin construction of the second unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant together with Russia in the near future

Iran hopes that in the near future together with Russia it will be able to begin construction of the second unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, announced the Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi today. "We had an agreement that the capacity of the nuclear plant to be built by Russia in Iran, will be about 5 thousand megawatts. Bushehr nuclear power plant generates one thousand, there are four thousands next in turn”, he said.

The minister reminded that today during the intergovernmental panel meeting a mutual understanding was reached as to the agreement of 1992. "I hope that, together with colleagues from Russia, we will be able to begin construction of the second unit of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in the near future," he said.

Construction of the nuclear power plant near the city of Bushehr began in 1975. At that time works on construction of the nuclear power plant were carried out by a company from West Germany. However, in 1980, West Germany joined the U.S. sanctions against Iran and the construction was stopped. On August 24, 1992 the Governments of the Russian Federation and Iran concluded the agreement on cooperation in peaceful application of atomic energy. As soon as the next day, on August 25, 1992, the parties agreed to continue the construction of the Bushehr nuclear plant. In January 1995, a contract was signed for the completion of the first power unit of the plant. In last August, it was leveled up to 100 percent of its design capacity.
