Novovoronezh NPP-2: grid connection of the world’s first 3+ generation power unit is planned for the summer of 2016


Grid connection of Power Unit №1 (PWR-1200 reactor) of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (the reference plant for “Akkuyu” NPP) is planned for the summer of the present year. It was announced by Vladimir Povarov, Nuclear Power Plant Director, at the regular meeting. Andrei Petrov, Chief Executive Officer of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC (part of Rosatom SC periphery) in his turn emphasized that the plant safety issues were top-priority in the course of the works. 


The participants of the meeting discussed the equipment supply issues, the timeframe for obtaining permits, the progress of certain operations required to reach the minimum controllable power level and also the progress of the unit’s physical start-up. Andrei Petrov congratulated everybody with its commencement and noted that the start of fuel loading was the essential stage of the work schedule. He also emphasized that well-timed preparation for power start-up depended on strict observance of all subsequent steps.



At present the dummy assemblies previously loaded to the reactor of Power Unit №1 are being replaced with nuclear fuel assemblies. 108 assemblies of 163 have been loaded as of the 30th of March, 2016.

Power Unit №1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 is a standard design of the new 3+ generation Russian NPP with improved performance indicators. It is constructed in accordance with the NPP-2006 project with PWR-1200 reactor facility. Half-a-century experience of safe operation and accident-free performance of NPPs with PWR reactors formed the basis of the project. The modern project takes into account compliance with the requirements of Russian regulatory documents and IAEA recommendations. The main peculiarity of the innovative power unit is the use of additional passive safety systems in combination with traditional active systems.


The NPP-2006 project provides for the protection against earthquakes, seismic surge, tornadoes, aircraft crash and other man-induced impacts and their combinations. The technical features of the 3+ generation reactor take into account all Russian safety requirements and recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with due regard for Fukushima NPP accident. The reactor hall (containment building) in the NPP-2006 project has double containment; the molten core catcher is installed under the reactor vessel, and the reactor facility is equipped with the passive residual heat removal system.   


Novovoronezh NPP-2 is the reference plant for “Akkuyu”, the first nuclear power plant in the Republic of Turkey.
