November 12, 2021, Aydincik, Mersin province, Turkey. - On the occasion of the National Greening Day, established by President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2019, traditional tree planting events were held throughout Turkey on November 11. Representatives of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC also organized an environmental campaign and planted fruit tree seedlings together with the students of the Kumas school in Aydincik district near the construction site of the Akkuyu NPP.
Mandarin trees were especially chosen because they are one of the symbols of Mersin. 15 mandarin trees were planted during the event. Then the children were given gifts: pots, flower seeds and drawing kits.
The event was attended by Aydincik District Governor Muhammet Kilicaslan, the head of the Aydincik district education department Omer Yazgan, AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC Director of Communications Kiyra J. Staples, AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC Regional Communication Unit Expert Eyyup Lutfi Sarici, Primary School Principal Ibrahim Cal as well as teachers and pupils.
Eyyup Lutfi Sarici, expert of the Regional Communication Unit, spoke on behalf of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC: “AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC pays great attention to the implementation of environmental initiatives in the region of construction of the Akkuyu NPP. Representatives of the company have been taking an active part in landscaping events for many years and we are glad to be with you on this day. In an environment where the world is facing the threat of climate change, such actions are important because they instill in the younger generation a sense of responsibility for the preservation of the environment and emphasize the importance of caring for nature.”
“On this day, landscaping events are held throughout Turkey. We did not stand aside and made a decision together with representatives of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC to plant trees in this school yard. We live in an era of industrialization, when production volumes are rapidly increasing, the population is growing, which negatively affects our nature. Our common goal is to care for the environment in order to ensure a healthy future for us and future generations. I want to thank JSC AKKUYU NUCLEAR, and I hope that in the future such events will be held more often.”Aydincik District Governor Muhammet Kilicaslan noted.
Since 2016 AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC has been regularly participating in tree planting activities in the region of Akkuyu NPP construction. The company had previously held similar events in Buyukeceli, Silifke and Emirler Village.
