Turkish professional sportsmen visited Mersin PIC of Akkuyu NPP


The professional handball team of Mersin visited the Public Information Center (PIC) of Akkuyu NPP. The handball is one of the most popular sports in the Republic of Turkey only giving place to the soccer and basketball. 



The PIC Director Faruk Uzel and its employees welcomed the team headed by its coach Osman Ozoglu. The PIC’s specialists told to the sportsmen about the Akkuyu NPP construction project in the Province of Mersin, safety systems of the plant, importance of the plant for the economic development of the Republic of Turkey, by using pictorial diagrams, dummies and modern vision aids. «Construction of the first nuclear power plant is a large-scale investment project for the Province of Mersin and for the whole country. The settlement of Büyükeceli (the closest population area to the construction site) with a population of 1,500 people will become a modern town with all relevant infrastructures. NPP will impact the entire economy of the region and give a new impetus to expedite the economic growth rate both of Mersin and Turkey as a whole. Tens of thousands of workplaces will be created during the plant construction and operation» - the PIC Director noted during the tour.


The sportsmen got to know that Turkey is a second country in the world after China in terms of power demand growth rates. «Territory of the Turkish Republic is not rich in hydrocarbons to be used for electric power generation, and the country has to purchase them, and that has adverse effect on the nation trade balance. The country’s government stimulates projects associated with renewable energy sources (RES), and concurrently tries to diversify the power system of the country by way of ecology friendly sources, namely, this nuclear power plant» Faruk Uzel said.



After the tour the sportsmen asked their questions of concern, and the Center’s employees provided them with exhaustive answers. The coach of the team thanked for the offered information and noted that dynamic development of Turkey necessitated atomic energy. «Akkuyu NPP is actively collaborating with the population of Mersin province and Turkey as a whole. We are now convinced that peaceful atom must serve for the benefits of the citizens of our country» Osman Ozoglu said.

Mersin handball team was formed in 2005. As of today the team plays in the Turkish Handball Super League and occupies the 6th position of 14. From 20 players 5 are mercenaries from Macedonia, Russian, Croatia and Ukraine. From 2006 through 2009 the team took part in the Europe League and in 2008 won the Turkey Handball Cup.
